Game of Thrones Inspired Quilt

kreationsbyjulz.com

i have my spring garden planted and looking great, so it’s back to some quilting. i hadn’t bought fabric in two weeks! so i made my way to the 1/2 off table at Beverly’s this past weekend and ended up with some great fabric.

i’m obsessed with the HBO series Game of Thrones [it's my quilty pleasure] and when i spied the Elizabethtown by Jo Morton for Andover Fabrics, the colors and prints inspired me to create a ‘Game of Thrones’ quilt.

i’m almost finished piecing my lone star quilt, but i’m taking a break to get started on my GOT quilt!

stay tuned!

Nature’s Basket by Blackbird Designs Moda Fabrics

…and onward to my next project!

i made a quick visit to one of my favorite quilt shops this past weekend, the Quilted Angel… and by quick, i mean my husband was waiting in the car while i decided what i wanted to purchase, which in turn means i have a limited amount of time before i get a text saying ‘times up’…lol

i went there with no plan, i just wanted something to grab me and say… buy me, buy me…except for the fact that most fabrics say, buy me.. i settled on a Nature’s Basket by Blackbird Designs jelly roll and coordinating yardage.

..as for the next step, i’ve narrowed it down to flying dutchman or log cabin….stay tuned..

Equilateral Triangle Quilt

kreationsbyjulz.com

last night [april 4] i began my first attempt at creating a quilt using equilateral triangles, with my Juliana Horner fabric stash. the cutting was easy peasy with the Fons & Porter 60° pyramid ruler.. but the piecing part, is a bit slower for me, i think it’s just the fact that i’m so worried about my points matching up.. that perfectionist part of me rearing its ugly head…

i must relax and just have fun!….. in fact fabric shopping is on my to-do list today, i need to hunt down my kona bone fabric to finish my homeschool quilt and plan to visit one of my favorite local quilt shops.

update. finished quilt, april 12th

my equilateral quilt is complete and i love it!

i wanted minimal quilting, so this quilt would wash up soft and cuddly. i simply stitched straight lines creating a diamond pattern. i love the look of the diamonds on the back of the quilt.

i used 2 1/2″ x 4″ strip sets to create the border and the strips along the back of the quilt.

i finished my quilt off with my favorite double binding technique, you can find a complete tutorial here, those mitered corners  come out perfect every time!

Homeschool Quilt

kreationsbyjulz.com

next up… another birthday quilt! this time, it’s for one of my little munchkins in daycare. the fabric is by Windham Fabrics, and is perfectly fitting, the fabric is called ‘homeschool’, and i happen to homeschool my daycare children.

i’m not using a pattern, it’s pretty much a quilt as i go, i am using 2 1/2″ strips of fabric and the printed fabric will be the actual back of the quilt. i have  a few ideas whirling around in my head, so we’ll see how this work in progress goes…

i was almost finished with the front of my quilt when my progress came to a grinding halt because of 1 1/2″ of fabric!

i ran out of kona bone, i literally needed 1 1/2″ to finish one last piece of the sashing, and as luck would have it, both joann’s and beverly’s are currently out of stock. so i must venture to the next city to hopefully find it!

so much for my toddler-quilt-in-a-day…

to be continued…..

finished quilt, april 11th.

i added some simple free motion quilting, daisies within each block and loops in the sashing. i didn’t want to quilt to densely, because i wanted this quilt to be soft and cuddly. i used my tried and true double binding technique to finish off this quilt, tutorial here.

‘Coming Home’.. Quilt

kreationsbyjulz.com

‘coming home’.. another birthday quilt, using Juliana Horner and Denyse Schmidt fabrics from various collections. the pattern is on page 12 of  Precut Quilts.. although as you can see, i won’t be using precuts..

yeah!..i finished the ‘coming home’ quilt last night! another completed birthday quilt, and just in time, since she’ll be in town this weekend!

i made a lap size quilt, using 16-10″x10″ squares vs 30, and i omitted the 1″ sashing around the edge of the quilt because i couldn’t find a fabric that i liked.. i think it came out adorable..

once again sunny california is not sunny, in fact it’s gray and gloomy, which i’ve decided is a given when it’s time for me to take photos of a quilt, i’m quite sure the sun will come out after i’ve already posted these photos..

Modbox Meets Game Night

kreationsbyjulz.com

‘man’ quilts.. am i the only one who has a hard time picking fabrics and patterns for a masculine quilt…? i need to whip together a quilt for my son-in-laws birthday this week. he likes old worn in t-shirts, pandas and the color black and grey.. honestly, that doesn’t give me much to work with..

i narrowed down my patterns to two quilts from issue 9 of Quilt It Today , and ended up choosing “Game Night”, a fun quilt with big bold arrows, and chose six prints from Juliana Horner’s Modbox Collection..

watch this video to discover Juliana’s inspiration for her most recent collection, p.s. she’s absolutely adorable, and has her mother’s beauty..

well, who said, you can’t start a quilt at 10pm… haha

progress report. 3-25-14

i’m loving these prints..

note to self, don’t start cutting at 10pm, when i’m tired, i wasn’t paying attention, my ruler slid and i cut a whole strip wrong.. and of course i had the minimum amount of fabric, so i’ll be making a trip back to the fabric store..

progress..

[Mini] Scrappy Kona Pixel Heart

Scrappy Kona Pixal Heart Mini

a cute little pixel heart mini quilt created with 2 1/2″ scraps of all the Kona cottons solids that i’ve worked with thus far, somewhat of a ‘milestone marker’ quilt..

it’s not perfect, and that’s okay, i think it’s adorable and when i look at it it makes me smile, isn’t that all that matters when you’re done with a project..

Scrappy Kona Pixal Heart Mini - back

i’m still finding fabric designers i love, but Kona solids are the first fabric i fell in love with, so a heart somehow seems to fit!

..and by night, this mini pixel heart covers my baby lock Melody!

Red + Aqua Springtime Spools

Red and Aqua Springtime Spools

one of my current ‘works in progress’.. i’d been collecting these red and aqua prints for a quilt, but what pattern..? half square triangles..? triangles..? nine patch..? i had no idea, until the other day when i was searching for inspiration and stumbled upon camille roskelley’s ‘Spools #154′ at Thimble Blossoms. a new adventure for me, since i’m fairly new to quilting and i’ve never pieced a spool quilt..

so i downloaded the pattern and went to town cutting. i’m not going to lie, i’m not a fan of those 64 pesky little 1 1/4″ squares that i had to sew onto the ends of the spools, but i got through it and now i’m moving onto piecing the spool together.

…and in case you didn’t notice, this is the same fabric in the 5 minute DIY jelly roll..
