Game of Thrones Inspired Quilt

kreationsbyjulz.com

i have my spring garden planted and looking great, so it’s back to some quilting. i hadn’t bought fabric in two weeks! so i made my way to the 1/2 off table at Beverly’s this past weekend and ended up with some great fabric.

i’m obsessed with the HBO series Game of Thrones [it's my quilty pleasure] and when i spied the Elizabethtown by Jo Morton for Andover Fabrics, the colors and prints inspired me to create a ‘Game of Thrones’ quilt.

i’m almost finished piecing my lone star quilt, but i’m taking a break to get started on my GOT quilt!

stay tuned!

Quilt. Sew. Craft. on a Budget

kreationsbyjulz.com

budgets….boooo! but in todays times a large portion of those who love to quilt, sew and craft, have a budget. after all we do need to pay our electric bills so we can see what we’re crafting and run our machines. *giggle*

in a few of my previous posts i’ve mentioned that i always try to purchase my fabrics, tools, gadgets on sale, or with a coupon. obviously that isn’t always possible, and more of a challenge to do at local quilt shops, but not impossible.

lets talk about how to save you money..

Scrap Attack! Cut & Organize Fabric Scraps

kreationsbyjulz.com

todays mission… to attack my scraps! i let them get out of control, and honestly didn’t want to look at them, i just kept squishing my scrap pile down, and down some more to make more room for more scraps..

today was going to be the day i sorted through all my scraps… ughh

my plan of attack, to cut my scraps into my most used sizes. so, i gathered my supplies:

  • omnigrid 6″ x 24″, 2.5″ x 18″, 2.5″ and my 5″ square rulers
  • rotary cutting mat
  • olfa splash rotary cutter
  • 3 container store clear containers
  • avery 2″ x 3″ clear labels

Juliana Horner + Denyse Schmidt Fabric

kreationsbyjulz.com

who says, when you’re on a mission to purchase the fabric for the backing of a quilt, you can’t purchase even more fabric!

i swear my shopping cart just veers towards all the quilting fabric it’s ‘almost’ unstoppable, [ok not really]..

i’m backing my ‘game night’ quilt and loved the Juliana Horner fabric i worked with and need to create a quilt for my daughter who also had a birthday..[but she lives out of town, so i have extra time to get hers finished..].. so i scoured the shelves for more Juliana Horner fabric. i ended up with four more Juliana Horner fabrics alternated with four Denyse Schmitz fabrics.

stayed tuned, as i already have the pattern and just need to start cutting!

Modbox Meets Game Night

kreationsbyjulz.com

‘man’ quilts.. am i the only one who has a hard time picking fabrics and patterns for a masculine quilt…? i need to whip together a quilt for my son-in-laws birthday this week. he likes old worn in t-shirts, pandas and the color black and grey.. honestly, that doesn’t give me much to work with..

i narrowed down my patterns to two quilts from issue 9 of Quilt It Today , and ended up choosing “Game Night”, a fun quilt with big bold arrows, and chose six prints from Juliana Horner’s Modbox Collection..

watch this video to discover Juliana’s inspiration for her most recent collection, p.s. she’s absolutely adorable, and has her mother’s beauty..

well, who said, you can’t start a quilt at 10pm… haha

progress report. 3-25-14

i’m loving these prints..

note to self, don’t start cutting at 10pm, when i’m tired, i wasn’t paying attention, my ruler slid and i cut a whole strip wrong.. and of course i had the minimum amount of fabric, so i’ll be making a trip back to the fabric store..

progress..

Springtime and a New Fabric Shop

April Showers by Bonnie and Camille

it was a gorgeous day today, 79 degrees and it definitely feels like springtime in cali, i wore flip flops and a tank top, realizing that i’m overdue for a pedicure..

after being sick for a week, i went shopping! i found this amazing little fabric shop, the ‘quilted angel’, the shop has over 5000 bolts of fabric, it was a lil slice of heaven. i walked around and around and around again, admiring, touching, in awe over all the beautiful fabrics. this was, exactly what the doctor ordered, ok not really, but i sure felt better walking out the door with my bag of goodies

i’ve been ooohhhing and ahhhingg over Moda’s april showers by bonnie and camille for a couple weeks now, and guess what i found… a jelly roll and a charm pack..mine, mine, mine!

Scrumptious by Bonnie and Camille

but alas, they had just sold their last jelly roll of Moda’s scrumptious by bonnie and camille yesterday, boo! that’s okay, i picked up this mini charm pack and a quarter yard of that ober cute striped fabric from the same collection.

but it didn’t end there..Fresh Fabric Treats

i bought fresh fabric treats, and can honestly say this book has 16 very yummy projects, including quilts, totes, organizers and more, i want to create them all!

there’s nothing like new fabric and a new book to inspire and excite a quilter, i’m inspired and excited.. and off to work on my first project!

i hope you’re having an amazing day!

5 Minute DIY Jelly Roll

5 Minute DIY Jelly Roll

it dawned on me this morning while i was cutting strips out of some aqua and red prints i’ve been collecting, that a DIY jelly roll of your favorite fabrics would be a great gift for a friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker who also has the quilting ‘bug’ aka addiction..

i thought i’d share my technique for cutting quick 2 1/2″ strips aka jelly roll strips.. this likely is not new for the seasoned quilter, and i’m sure there are other ways, but it’s been the technique that gets the job done for me.

note: a standard jelly roll consists of 40 strips of various “dark & light” prints cut along the width-of-fabric [WOF=selvage to selvage].

the gift of a DIY jelly roll.

  • create your own unique jelly rolls with scraps, new or vintage fabric.
  • your jelly roll does not need to consist of 40 strips, the choice is up to you. a lap quilt can easily be made with half a standard jelly roll [20 strips].
  • once you’ve cut your strips, carefully roll your jelly roll, smoothing as you go, and use a rubber band to secure.
  • wrap twine or ribbon around your jelly roll, tie, removing the rubber band is optional, attach a note and your gift is ready for the giving.

Candy Shop by Michael Miller Fabric

Candy Shop by Michael Miller Fabric

i L.O.V.E  this fabric, the moment i saw it on etsy i had to have it! it so reminds me of my childhood, books that my mom used to read me, soda shops, ice cream and lollypops, it just doesn’t get any better than that!

i have no idea what i’m going to do with it…for now every time i look at it it makes me smile and remember the simple life of a 6 year old….

did you ever buy a fabric that reminded you of a past time? what did you create with it?
